As cliché as it is, there’s truth to it…

👉It’s all about the JOURNEY, rather than the DESTINATION.

If we want to become better climbers, it’s important to have an idea of what we’d like our destination (goal) to be. That can be anything that YOU want it to be. It can be to send a specific grade, or that you’d like to have power like Janja Garnbret, or that you’d like to have really great footwork, or to climb the Grand Wall on the Chief in Squamish for your birthday. The list here is endless because there are many ways in which we can enjoy climbing.

When our mindset is hyper-focused on the end result though, we miss out on one (of many) very important key points to being able to progress within climbing - and that is mindfulness. Mindfulness brings our attention to the present rather than being stuck on something in the future (or past); it creates space for us to find those little nuggets of progress, whether that’s on multiple attempts of a project in a given day or over time, with your technique, or overall year after year. Mindfulness allows us to list the reason our foot slipped instead of stating that it’s just our shoes and that they suck and that’s why the foot slipped. It invites curiosity and ownership of your process; and with that comes a balanced sense of confidence that can not be found when someone is hyper-focused on the end result.

Mindfulness offers you the space to ask yourself “What was I most proud of in today’s session,” and answer honestly without feeling guilt or shame because sometimes the answer is that “I showed up when I didn’t want to,” or “I kept it easier than I wanted to because I feel tired/undernourished/mentally fatigued.” Sometimes we get to answer things like “I found a different body position for the top out and it feels doable,” or “I SENT!” or “I learned that I only climb with open hips.” And ALL OF IT is ok because it’s part of YOUR journey.

We rolled out Climb + Coffee last summer for a few reasons:

✨We saw a need for community meetups outdoors where folks could rock climb in a safe environment.
✨The funds we raise for Climb + Coffee go directly to supporting our sliding scale payment model for outdoor educational clinics so that we can create more equity for quality rock climbing education. We want to deliver climbing education at an affordable price AND still pay our women and genderqueer guides a competitive rate.
